Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands - 8 Days
Day 1
Journey to Quito, Ecuador. At an altitude of 9,300 feet, you are arriving at the second highest capital in the world!
Day 2
Your tour guide will meet you at the Quito airport. After checking into our hotel we will enjoy a guided walking tour of Quito that will include a visit to Independence Plaza, the Legislative Palace, and San Agustin, the oldest monastery in Quito.
Day 3
Today we will visit Mitad del Mundo which marks the exact spot of the equator. Stand in both the northern and southern hemispheres! In the afternoon we will take a trip into the Andean countryside to view the Cotopaxi Volcano. Stand in awe at the base of this 19,700 foot mountain, the largest active volcano in the world. Discuss how volcanoes influence geologic and climatic systems. Later explore the nearby National Park to view rare and endangered birds such as the Andean Condor and the Carunculated Caracara.
Day 4
Day excursion to the Mindo Rain Forest! We will be going on a nature walk into the rain forest and discuss the local flora and fauna. Opt to go on an inner tube ride down the beautiful Rio Mindo River.
Day 5
Fly to the Galapagos Islands, 620 miles off the coast of Ecuador! Introduction to the islands and time to relax before we set sail the following day!
Day 6,7
These two days will be spent cruising around the gorgeous Galapagos Islands. View rare species such as albatross, pink flamingos, marine iguanas, and sea lions. Did you know that the Galapagos Islands were named after the giant tortoises which inhabit the islands? Visit Green Beach, named for the unique color of its sand. Tour the Charles Darwin Research Center, filled with international scientists. View the stunning “Kicker Rock” standing 500 feet above the ocean surface. This unique formation provides a natural habitat for frigate birds and blue-footed boobies who use this area as their breeding ground.
Day 8
After eight incredible days, travel home from Quito!!
