Monteverde/Santa Elena Cloud Forest

The Monteverde Costa Rica Cloud Forest is one of the most famous conservation area in Central America. It's a tropical rain forest but because of it's altitude (1400 meters or 4.600 feet), it's called a Cloud Forest. It offers extraordinary biological diversity, incomparable scenery and a year-round temperate climate. Spectacular wildlife includes the Jaguar, Ocelot, Baird´s Tapir, Three-wattled Bellbird, Bare-necked Umbrella bird and the famous elusive Resplendent Quetzal.

Camino Real Hike

1.5 km hike along the San Luis River ridge
Intended as an orientation to the area

Casita trails

Búho-Zapote Loop

1 km circuits of short trails around the dining hall area

Allow approximately one hour


Ethno botanical Garden

1.5 hectares of gardens and forest trails including a display of common edible and medicinal plants

Insect-O-Rama

Workshop on insect taxonomy.  Collect some insects and then learn about their natural history.  Includes a look at our teaching collection.


Plant –ID-

Workshop on tropical plant families. Collect some plants and learn how to identified the different families of tropical plants. Allow 1 hour.


Finca La Bella coffee tour

Tour through a small farm growing coffee, sugar cane, and vegetables-wonderful example of sustainability

Coffee Mill Tour

See how coffee is processed, including drying and roasting

Waterfall Hike

Frog pond

Guided tour of many frog species outlining their natural history-best if can be viewed in the evening

Serpentarium

Guided tour of 40 reptile species

Santa Elena Reserve

Cloud forest reserve owned and operated by the local high school-nice trails of varying lengths
*Ask a naturalist to go along on as a guide (if available and desired)
*Allow 2 hours to all day-plus 45 min. travel time


Ecological Farm

Reserve in which feeding stations are used to attract birds and mammals
*Allow 2 hours plus 20 min. travel time


Bajo del Tigre Trail

Self-guided trails administered by the Children’s Eternal Rainforest-fewer visitors so nice environment
