Nova Scotia and Newfoundland - 10 Days



Day 1
Depart for Boston Massachusetts. That afternoon you tour this historic city and take the Freedom Walk which brings you by many famous historical sites in Boston, including Bunker Hill, Old Ironsides, and the Old North Church, made famous on Paul Revere’s Ride. Later that day you travel to Portland, Maine where you stay that night.

Day 2
Board the ferry for your journey to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the starting point to your Canadian adventure. Your group travels up to Halifax, but on the way you stop at the Seaside Adjunct Kejimkujik National Park for a hike through spectacular coastal country.

Day 3
Historic walk through downtown Halifax. Enjoy strolling by St Paul’s Cathedral, experience the star-shaped Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, and many other sites in this fascinating city. In the afternoon immerse yourselves into the marine history of Nova Scotia. See the world’s best collection of wooden artifacts from the Titanic, step aboard a 93 year old steamship or picture yourselves floating above the remnants of an 18th century shipwreck.

Day 4
This morning your group heads north to the “highlands” of Cape Breton Island. Crossing the Canso Causeway, you pass through Beddeck, home of Alexander Graham Bell, then on to Sydney, where your group visits the site of one of the biggest ecological disasters in Canada—the Sydney Tar Pits in Wilson Park.

Days 5, 6
Board the ferry and head for Port Aux Basques Newfoundland. Your group travels north to Gros Morne National Park, a geologist’s dream. For two days explore the Table Lands—a piece of the mantle that was thrust to the surface 250 mya and take a boat ride on West Brook Pond that takes you back in geologic time. This part of the journey is topped off with a sea kayaking trip on Bonne Bay, home of abundant sea life where whale sightings are common.

Day 7
Continuing north, travel to the Viking Trail, location of a thousand year old Viking Settlement and a designated UNESCO site at L’Anse aux Meadows. Take a whale watching tour and at sunset watch the icebergs float by.

Day 8
Today head south again and cross over to Sydney where we will travel north to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, origin of the famed Cabot’s trail. Hiking along the coastline or deep in ancient maple forests highlights this day. Stay that night at Lauries Motor Inn in Cheticamp along the northwest coast.

Day 9
Experience a once-in-a-lifetime white water adventure on the Shubenacadie River, where we will witness the tidal bore first hand, as you ride upstream on the strongest tides in the world. That afternoon head back to Yarmouth and board the ferry for your return trip to Portland.

Day 10
Return to Boston for your flight back home.
