New York City Service Trip - 5 Days
Students will volunteer with a variety of inner city service organizations. Participates will not only serve those less fortunate than themselves, but will also gain a first-hand experience of the challenges of urban life and the valuable role that volunteer organizations play.
Examples of service sites include the following (confirmation of the specific organizations that will be used will follow booking):
Furnish a Future (furniture warehouse for homeless)
Harlem Center for Education (after school tutoring)
Habitat for Humanity (light construction)
Salvation Army (clothes and home furnishings warehouse)
The Bowery (preparing and serving meals to homeless)
Day 1
Arrive at your NYC hotel in the middle of Manhattan in late morning. We want you to experience Manhattan at its best, so we have arranged for you to stay right in the heart of the city!
We will not be able to check in until 3 PM. After having a welcome/orientation/safety session with our guides, we will depart for our “urban hike” to see many of the sights of Midtown Manhattan.
Days 2-4
The majority of each day will be spent at various service projects, with different groups going to various service locations around the city, chaperoned by a Global Travel Alliance guide and school leader. Meal times, after school program needs, and general schedules of the service organizations will determine the final schedule.
During non-service times, students will also get to experience the following:
Times Square
Rockefeller Center
Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
Ground Zero
Trinity Church
China Town/Little Italy
Federal Hall
NY Stock Exchange
5th Avenue
Central Park
Macys and other famous shops
South Street Seaport
